As we disclosed to you several weeks ago, on December 2, 2020, the New York City Council held a hearing regarding another monstrous unfunded mandate in the form Intro 1146B, a bill that would require all residential buildings 40 feet or taller to be retrofitted with automatic sprinklers by December 31, 2029.

 

In light of the extraordinary cost of such an installation and the minimal safety benefits provided, this bill met harsh and swift opposition from many of the organizations representing the interested parties, including the PCCC on behalf of the Coop Community. In fact, it resulted in one of the rarest of moments when both Landlord and Tenant organizations actually agreed on an issue.

 

The PCCC has been in contact with several of the offices of the elected officials involved in this legislative proposal. We have been informed that the bill has no traction and they expect it to be dormant for the foreseeable future. Robert Comegys, JR., Chairperson of the NYC Council Committee on Housing and Buildings, has publicly expressed his opposition to the Automatic Sprinkler proposal, which means this bill is going nowhere.
